UPC researchers develop high-efficiency photovoltaic cells

The Micro- and Nanotechnology Research Group of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, UPC-Barcelona Tech, has produced silicon photovoltaic cells with a conversion efficiency of 20.5%, the highest level achieved in Spain using this material. This figure is comparable to results obtained by leading research groups in the field at the international level.

Marie Curie Fellowship – Initial Training Network in Electrocatalysis
1 year postdoctoral position with possibility of extension, Czech Republic.
A position has arisen at the J Heyrovsky Institute for Physical Chemistry, Prague, for a Marie Curie
experienced researcher to work in the field of applied electro-catalysis for one year with the possibility
of extension. The research will focus on the electrocatalysis of oxygen evolution for renewable energy
applications and will also provide an opportunity to work for short periods in an industrial research
environment at the Johnson Matthey Technology Centre, Reading UK.
This is an EU funded project with special restrictions. The successful candidate must not have resided or
carried out their main activity in the Czech Republic for more than 12 months in the last 3 years.
Candidates must also have obtained a degree in chemistry or material science within the last five years
and must possess a PhD or equivalent. Candidates should ideally have an aptitude for inorganic
synthetic work.
Salary and compensation benefits are set by the rules for the Marie Curie Initial training networks.

HOPV11 Conference in Valencia, 15 to 18 May 2011

You are invited to participate in the 3rd international Conference on Hybrid and Organic Photovoltaics, from 15 to 18 May 2011, in the beautiful and atmospheric city of Valencia, Spain.
The main topics of the conference are the development, function and modelling of materials and devices for hybrid and organic solar cells, including dye-sensitized solar cells, polymer / fullerene solar cells, small molecule organic solar cells, and other ‘excitonic’ solar cell technologies, including hybrid organic / inorganic and nanostructured devices. These solar cell technologies are showing rapid advances both in academia and, increasingly, in comercial development. Building upon success of the the previous HOPV conferences, HOPV 2011 will address the latest advances in science and technology of hybrid and organic solar cells.

The conference will be led by a strong list of invited speakers with a broad geographical distribution covering a broad range of the latest scientific advances on hybrid and organic photovoltaics in morning plenary sessions. The Conference encourages presentation of oral as well as poster contributions from scientists from all over the world, which will be presented in two parallel sessions running in the afternoons . Just submit your abstracts before the deadline, which is strict. These formal talks will be complimented by discussion sessions to foster strategic discussions on specific topics highlighted in the Conference.

Postdoctoral positions on dye sensitised solar cells at Monash

Positions are available within the Victorian Organic Solar Cell Consortium (VICOSC 2) to carry out research under a AUD $10m Victorian Science Agenda – Strategic Project Fund supported project to deliver printed organic and dye sensitised solar cell as a pre-commercial product. The VICOSC consortium consists of the University of Melbourne, Monash University, CSIRO Future Manufacturing Flagship, BlueScope Steel, Securency International, Innovia Films Limited and Robert Bosch SEA Pte Ltd.

Nine Postdoctoral positions are available in the areas of a) scale-up and synthesis, b) barriers and encapsulation, c) printing, d) prototype device design and e) performance and durability.

Four PhD studentships are available at Monash University in the areas of a) novel device architectures for dye-sensitized solar cells, b) Liquid electrolytes based on non-iodide/redox couples, c) ionic-liquid/quasi solid electrolytes based on non-iodide redox couples and d) stability of plastic dye sensitised solar cells (applicants must have Australian permanent residence).

“Hybrid photovoltaics position”

CIDETEC, which is located in San Sebastián, Basque Country (Spain), is currently looking for a post-doctoral researcher who is interested in working in an inspiring international and interdisciplinary environment in the area of hybrid photovoltaics.
The position holder, joining the CIDETEC photovoltaics research group, will systematically evaluate various polymers and organic molecules as hole transporter materials in hybrid solar cells. Additional to the planning and conducting the experimental activities, the suitable candidate will report on the experimental work.
The position requires a PhD in Chemistry, Physics, and/or Materials Science. Candidates should have experience in the fabrication and characterization of solar cells, with a preferred expertise in hybrid inorganic/organic devices. Knowledge on the synthesis and/or processing of hole transporter materials will be especially considered. Proficiency in spoken and written English is required.

International Workshop Organic optoelectronic devices: simulation and models of operation

Organic materials and devices are opening a broad range of applications and scientific questions. This International Workshop is a one day discussion of key aspects of optoelectronic materials based on, or employing, organic materials as one of the key constituents. A list of reknown scientists of this field will present short talks, that will be followed by ample discussion.
The main topics covered by the Workshop is the operation of organic solar cells, organic transistors, and OLEDs, and how to deal with the complexity of carrier transport and electronic processes in general in organic conductors.

Curso de Verano en la Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo

El presente encuentro pretende por un lado dar a conocer desde el punto de vista divulgativo la labor investigadora de los grupos de mayor relevancia científica de España en diversas áreas (biología, nanotecnología, tecnologías de la información, física, química, etc.). Asimismo, participarán como ponentes periodistas científicos que pondrán de manifiesto las dificultades que se encuentran en relación a la difusión de los resultados de la investigación que se realiza en nuestro país. Este curso pretende ser un punto de encuentro entre científicos y periodistas en el que se intercambien puntos de vista y se articulen estrategias para una mayor colaboración entre ambos colectivos. Está dirigido tanto a futuros periodistas científicos como a todos los investigadores, desde el nivel predoctoral, que estén interesados en la difusión de la ciencia a la sociedad.

La energía solar es abundante y no necesita almacenamiento ni distribución

Relacionar el trabajo de jóvenes investigadores con el mundo de la empresa ha sido uno de los objetivos del encuentro ‘Dispositivos nanométricos para el medio ambiente y aplicaciones energéticas’, que se clausuró ayer en Donostia. Han sido dos jornadas de trabajo organizadas por el centro tecnológico Cidetec-IK4 de Donostia, en el marco del proyecto Consolider Hope, en el que jóvenes investigadores trabajan en nuevas tecnologías. Han colaborado también los centros de investigación Nanogune y Energigune. Se han aunado distintas perspectivas para buscar «fuentes de energía alternativas, soluciones innovadoras para el medio ambiente y estrategias de ahorro energético», según los organizadores.

Catedrático de Física Aplicada en la Universidad Jaume I de Castellón, Juan Bisquert ha organizado las jornadas junto con Rebeca Marcilla, de Cidetec. «El proyecto Consolider Hope se dedica a investigar células solares con tecnologías baratas», explica. «Lleva dos años en marcha y gestiona cuatro millones de euros. Centros vascos de investigación, como Cidetec o Ikerlan, colaboran en el proyecto, que integra a catorce centros de España».

Impedance Spectroscopy School 2010, Castelló

The Impedance Spectroscopy School 2010 will take place at Universitat Jaume I, Castelló, Spain, 15 and 16 july 2010.
Two days of intensive training by means of selected lectures and hands-on experimental work on different aspects of impedance spectroscopy: a useful tool for materials, and device characterization. Strong emphasis will place on practical applications in photovoltaics and optoelectronic devices (dye-sensitized, organic, and hybrid solar cells, silicon solar cells, and organic light-emitting diodes). The course will covers the whole experimental process: from the design of experiments, set-up requirements, signal registering, to data analysis with special attention to computer-controlled instrumentation and use of software packages for data fitting and visualization.

Operating device mechanisms: injection, transport, recombination and extraction of charge carriers. Equivalent circuits.

The 4th edition of the International School on Organic Photovoltaics (ISOPHOS^®) is organized by the Center for Hybrid and Organic Solar Energy (CHOSE) – University of Rome Tor Vergata and DYERS.
